WordPress Basics: Adding an Image to your page

Posted by Ketan in WordPress

In the first of our guides, we’ll be showing you how to add an image (or a link to a PDF/Word document) to your post or page using the visual editor built into WordPress’ admin area. In this latest version of WordPress (2.5) the process of adding media to your content has been made extremely simple.

To get started you will need to have your image or document saved to your computer. If it’s an image you’ll be adding to your page, it ideally needs to be resized to your requirements, but if not, it’s not a problem as if correctly configured WordPress 2.5 will resize it for you. For this exercise we will be using an image.

1. Select the Page

To begin, first select the Page you want to edit from the Manage > Pages menu. Click the Page’s Title to enter editing mode.

Select your Page via the Manage > Pages menu

2. Select your Point of Insert

In the WordPress’ Visual Editor, click the point in your content where you would like to insert your image (or link to document). Create a new line if necessary by using the ‘return’ key.

Now, we are ready to insert your image/document link. To do this click on the first icon in the Add media options.

Add Media options

If you would like to add a PDF document or Word document instead of an image, then click the last icon in the Add media menu.

Upon clicking the necessary Add media icon, you will be presented with the following dialog box.

Select image from computer

3. Uploading your Image/Document

Click the Choose files to upload button as shown in the above dialog box, and browse your computer to select your file. Your file will be automatically uploaded to your webspace and on success you will be presented with the following options.

Upload details

For Search Engine friendliness and accessibility it is recommended that you enter both a Title and a Caption.

  • Title – Use between one to five words for the title.
  • Caption – This allows you to add a more descriptive caption to the image/document. It is best to keep it brief. For a more detailed description you can use the Description field.
  • Link URL – By default, this links to a larger version of the image, but it can be changed to link to another webpage or web address.
  • Alignment – Does exactly what it says!
  • Size – It is recommended that you use the Medium option as WordPress 2.5 will automatically resize your image to a compatible size. If you want to use the original size of your image then click ‘Full size’.

Once you have entered your images details, click the Insert into Post button.

4. Woohoo!

You now have your image inserted into your Page!
